The Anatomy of an Aries Rising

Hello everyone, welcome to my series where I will do a deep dive into exploring the Anatomy of an Aries Rising, showcasing some important features about the chart of an Aries Rising through using the system of Planetary Joys.

The scheme of Planetary Joys is an ancient Hellenistic principle, in which each of the 7 traditional planets are said to rejoice, or have an affinity with being, in one of the 12 houses. The Joys of the Planets are some of the underlying, foundational, principles that have informed the modern, significations we get for the twelve houses in astrology. Saturn rejoices in the 12th house, Jupiter in the 11th, the Sun in the 9th, Mars in the 6th, Venus in the 5th, the Moon in the 3rd, and Mercury in the 1st.

In this series, I have decided to overlay the Planetary Joys scheme on top of each rising sign. From this, we can extrapolate some of the core meanings and significators of not only that Rising Sign, but that Zodiac Sign as an archetype. Note, that no matter the rising sign, planets will rejoice in their house. However, the sign they will rejoice in will change depending on the rising sign. In looking at the zodiac sign each planet rejoices in a given rising sign, we are able to compare and contrast the relationship between what house each planet rejoices in, what sign that planet will fall in that house.

Mercury in Aries rejoices in the 1st House

With Aries Rising, we see that Mercury rejoices in the 1st house, your sign of Aries. This shows the fundamental expression of the Aries archetype, quick in motion, desiring to move fast, the brain running a million miles a minute, and finding some way to keep up. Mercury knows how to get shit done, and being ruled by Mars while rejoicing, there is a burst of life that comes forth with the Aries Rising. The burst of curiosity, to find the solution, to find the answer to one’s question. Much of the Aries Rising archetype is about the pursuit of knowledge, doing the right thing, and finding a direction to take one’s life. The Sun is exalted in Aries, the 1st house, and the Sun is the faculty of consciousness, knowingness, and being a leader. Aries is definitely the leader archetype, although when the Aries Risings feels like they’re acting without a purpose, or clear sense of direction, that confusion can lead to frustration and anger.

The Moon in Gemini rejoices in the 3rd, Sun in Sagittarius rejoices in the 9th

The Moon rejoices in the 3rd house, which reinforces this theme of stagnation being something that Aries Rising feels can hold them back. The Third House is the place of daily routine, fluctuations, travel, your neighborhood, and things you do on a day to day basis. With the Moon rejoicing in their 3rd House of Gemini, there’s the next to talk, to express information, and at lightning speed too. Moving fast and being in a state of motion is what the Aries Rising thrives off of. Quick witter, light on their feet, constantly moving through the sea of knowledge and searching for the best course of action. Having the right information means being able to make the right decisions. Aries Risings have the Sun rejoicing in Sagittarius in the 9th House, meaning their sense of direction and the pursuit of a specific goal or vision is their motivation for action. Where does the Aries Rising shoot their arrow? The pursuit of knowledge is the destination, planets in the 9th house in the Natal Chart can show what the individual is in the pursuit of, but it’s to expand their vision, their horizons, and explore the possibilities of what they can achieve. The Sun has dignity by Triplicity in the house it rejoices in, the 9th ruled by Sagittarius, and it gives the Sun strength to be someone who learns. I said earlier that the Aries Rising is a leader, and in order to be a leader, or a teacher, it’s important to be a student yourself.

Mars in Virgo rejoices in the 6th House

Aries Risings are no stranger to effort. Mars rejoices in their 6th house ruled by Virgo, especially for those born during the night time, their meticulousness in their execution is not only precise, but technically profound. The perfectionism is not something the Aries Rising is a stranger to, but over exhausting from being too detailed, and getting to caught up in needing to control their environment can prevent them from being able to see the beauty in what is natural versus what is done by their own merits and effort. Mars rejoicing in their 6th of Virgo is not only someone who is not afraid to get in the nitty gritty, but is also a person who is interested in being right. One of the challenging things the Aries Rising can encounter is doing too much, overdoing something, micromanaging.

Venus in Leo rejoices in the 5th House

The truth is, Aries Risings wanted to be trusted for their knowledge, for their confidence, and for the ways their actions can help others. Venus rejoices in their 5th house ruled by Leo. Venus in Leo is someone who inspires others, makes others love themselves, and encourages others to express their self. For Aries Rising, self expression is everything— being yourself, fully, and authentically. Through their actions, the Aries Rising can inspire others to be bold, audacious, loud, and proud. The Aries Rising may be verbally loud, but they can also be loud in their actions. Their love runs deep. They love the rawness and honesty of others, and want to radiate the most honest version of themselves. This is why we love them. This behavior can also be expressed through their partners as well. The 5th house is the house of romance and love, and having Leo here can be someone who needs to be seen and acknowledged for who they are by their partner. There needs to be connection with purpose. Trust and honesty. The Aries Rising doesn’t want to just get to know their partner, they want to experience the warmth that they radiate. They want to feel the fire in their heart. They want to see the passion, and like being validated and affirmed in their sense of self and identity. Leo rules their 5th house after all.

Jupiter in Aquarius Rejoices in the 11th House

When it comes to their friends and their social circle, Jupiter rejoices in their 11th house ruled by Aquarius. These people are the leaders of groups of people, organizations, and their friends. Creating space, holding space, and being a supportive person for their friends is something that they value. Giving them protection and privacy for those who feel isolated. The Aries Rising is the person who welcomes everyone who has been unwelcomed or outcasted, and makes space for those people. The Aries Rising takes initiative to create community, to create a collective, and to be the structure for their friends. They may feel somewhat isolated and alone, since Saturn rules their 11th house, however, more thoughtfulness and mindfulness will come as they grow into understanding their place.

Saturn in Pisces Rejoices in the 12th House

With Saturn rejoicing in their 12th, they may struggle with telling themselves no. Self Discipline and control might be pretty difficult, since their 12th house is ruled by Pisces. Saturn is a planet of gravity or heaviness, and when Saturn is in a Jupiter ruled Sign, who is a lot more buoyant and bully, Saturn has a hard time enforcing its gravity and placing restrictions on the Aries Risings. This could be more problematic for the Aries Risings born during the night, but having Saturn rejoicing in Pisces shows the level of emotional depth that consumes the Aries Risings. There can be a lot of sorrow, pain, and grief, questioning their own emotional reality. For the Aries Risings, they may struggle with getting out of an emotional depression, or struggle with mental and emotional health issues. These themes are usually brought up by the 12th house, and having Saturn rejoicing here means Saturn is able to enforce these themes more. It’s important for the Aries Risings to take time to isolate and dive deeper into what they’re feeling. Working through these feelings can be more constructive than avoiding them or trying to escape them. Escaping your emotional problems will only make them grow greater.
